Aberdeen-based digital media production company SIGNAL2NOISE kicked off the new decade by winning four awards at the prestigious Aurora Awards in the U.S. for films made for two Aberdeen-based businesses, Equinor and Aberdeen Harbour Board. The awards include two Platinum ‘Best of show’ awards.
‘Come to Aberdeen’ was commissioned by Aberdeen Harbour to promote the 2020 British Ports Association Conference which is being hosted in Aberdeen by the Harbour Board in October this year. The film is a light-hearted tour of the Harbour and the region, hosted by none other than King David 1st of Scotland. Having given the harbour its charter in 1136, King David is the reason why the Harbour is the UK’s oldest company. In the film, the King proudly introduces the sights and sounds of Aberdeen, and occasionally reveals a rather hot temper.
The film was awarded Platinum Best of Show, in the categories for conventions/shows and external communications/PR.
Stephanie Flynn, communications manager at Aberdeen Harbour said: “We are absolutely thrilled with how well the film shows off Aberdeen Harbour, the city and surrounding countryside. The film was very popular when it was first shown at the British Ports Association Conference in Belfast in 2019, and these awards have set the 2020 Conference off to a great start. It’s always a pleasure working with SIGNAL2NOISE and we are very grateful for their original creative direction and stunning film work.”
British Ports association chief executive, Richard Ballantyne commented “We are extremely excited to be coming to Aberdeen for our Annual Conference and the authentic Scottish promotional film has really helped build up the anticipation. As well as providing a basis to market the event, it has prompted a great deal of positive interest about the conference and the atmosphere which we hope to create for visitors.”

‘Mariner - A Digital Frontrunner’ was commissioned by Equinor to promote its commitment to innovation and digital technology, and to showcase some of those technologies in action in its Mariner field. The film follows a day in the life of an Aberdeen employee whose working day involves using cutting-edge technologies to support safe and efficient operations and to communicate with her offshore colleagues, as well as enriching her family life. The film was well-received when it was first shown last year and has raised the profile of Equinor’s digital solutions.
The film was shot on location, in Aberdeen and offshore on the Mariner platform. It was awarded two Aurora gold awards in categories for Corporate Identity/Image and Awareness/PSA.

The Aurora judging panel is drawn from internationally recognised communications professionals. SIGNAL2NOISE have won several Aurora Awards before, since 2015 and for these 2020 awards the judges once again cited the quality of the creative and technical execution: “Love, love, love this production. King Dave is a hoot and the writing is excellent! Well shot, edited and produced. The concept was very well conceived and highly engaging. Makes us want to book a trip right now to Aberdeen!”
SIGNAL2NOISE writer/director Mark Turner said “We are grateful that Aberdeen Harbour and Equinor trusted us to take creative risks. That trust has been repaid with international recognition.”
Jamie Baikie, SIGNAL2NOISE senior producer said “2019 was our best year yet. We have big plans in 2020, and several major projects in the pipeline. We’re delighted to be successful in once again bringing home international awards. They’re confirmation that we’re on the right track.”
