Chorus has launched a UK-wide survey to establish a new benchmark for the cost of mandatory safety training across the energy sector.
The Aberdeen-based training, compliance and competence management platform is calling on businesses across Aberdeen to contribute data and help give the industry the evidence it needs to budget for safety training with greater confidence.
For energy companies, training is a significant and unavoidable business cost, yet there is limited visibility of how those costs compare across the wider sector. Course fees are only part of the picture, with travel, time out of rotation and backfill adding to the overall cost of keeping a workforce trained and compliant.
The new survey aims to address that gap by gathering data from Training Leads, HSE Managers, compliance professionals and others responsible for workforce training across the UK energy sector.
Importantly, it looks beyond course fees alone. Respondents are asked about the wider cost of mandatory safety training, including factors such as:
- Travel and accommodation
- Time away from normal duties or offshore rotation
- Backfill and cover
- Subsistence rates
The findings will be used to produce The Real Cost of Safety Training in Energy, 2026, a benchmark report designed to give businesses a clearer picture of what the sector is spending and provide a stronger evidence base for future training budgets.

Costs can vary significantly by provider, location and workforce requirements, but there has not yet been a shared reference point for businesses to understand how their own costs compare with their industry peers. This survey is about creating that reference point; a benchmark built from real industry data rather than assumptions.”

Right now, most businesses simply don't have visibility of the wider market. By pulling together data from oil and gas, renewables and the wider energy supply chain, we want to give people something practical they can use when planning and reviewing their training spend.”
The survey takes around 10 minutes to complete. Responses can be submitted anonymously, and individual companies will not be identified in the published findings.
Everyone who contributes will also have free access to the resulting benchmark report once sufficient data has been gathered.
