With the football season underway, Aberdeen legend Willie Miller gave some unsuspecting fans the surprise of their lives when he jumped on their matchday bus to Pittodrie to celebrate free travel for fans across the city.
As part of its partnership with the club, First Bus makes it easy for supporters to get to and from the stadium by offering free travel for those with a ticket to home matches.
And Willie Miller himself, voted Aberdeen’s greatest ever player, took advantage of the offer by jumping on the bus and meeting fans of all ages as they travelled to cheer on the Don.
Dressed in First Bus jacket and cap, the Gothenburg hero got on the bus like any other fan before instantly being recognised and sharing stories and taking photos with the fans who idolise him.
Willie Miller said: “It’s a fantastic partnership between First Bus and Aberdeen and I think the offer of free travel is a fantastic way of linking the local community to the club.
“The free travel offer is brilliant as it means both the current and next generation can get to the game without that worry of an additional cost.
“I was lucky enough to actually jump on one of the buses as fans made their way to the stadium and you can immediately feel the buzz and excitement and the bus is vital in creating this sense of connection. I’m just delighted the young ones knew who I was and the older ones still had me ahead of McLeish in their ratings!”
Any ticket purchaser for an Aberdeen home game is entitled to access free travel with First Bus on a matchday throughout the season.
It can all be done through the First Bus app, which guides users through the process using a unique code emailed to ticket holders by Aberdeen FC on the week of a game.
Graeme Macfarlan, Commercial Director at First Bus Scotland, said: “We’re big believers that the bus opens up your world and this partnership with Aberdeen FC is a shining example.
“Free travel means you can meet up with your friends for the game or take your child for their first taste of the Pittodrie atmosphere without the additional cost of a taxi or the trouble of finding somewhere to park.
“And what better way to celebrate than by welcoming the club’s greatest ever player onboard to travel to a game and provide a special surprise for some of the loyal fanbase.”
