An Aberdeen facilities management leader has taken his charity challenge to one of the world’s most iconic landmarks, completing a 20-kilometre walk along the Great Wall of China in 33°C heat while dressed as Superman.
Marius Coste, Group Cleaning Manager at Elior at Work, completed the challenge as part of his Miles of Smiles campaign, a personal commitment to cover at least 50 kilometres every week for 82 consecutive weeks in support of mental health and cancer charities.
Now in Week 55 of the challenge, the Great Wall became the latest stage in a journey that has already taken Marius thousands of kilometres across Scotland and beyond, demonstrating that resilience, consistency and community spirit can make a meaningful difference wherever life leads.
Reflecting on the experience, Marius said: “The Great Wall was built stone by stone by people who couldn’t see the finished result—they simply kept going. That perfectly reflects this journey. Every week is another step towards raising awareness, starting conversations about mental health and supporting people affected by cancer. Progress isn’t made in one giant leap; it’s made by showing up, week after week.”
Since launching Miles of Smiles, the campaign has reached a number of significant milestones:
- 3,553 kilometres completed
- More than £4,300 raised
- 263 cold showers
- 59 cold-water dips
- 27 weeks remaining
Funds raised continue to support SAMH and Clan Cancer Support, while the campaign encourages open conversations around mental health and reminds people that support is always available.
As a facilities management leader, Marius believes the challenge reflects values that extend beyond the workplace.
“Whether in business or in life, leadership is about consistency, resilience and supporting others. If this journey encourages even one person to reach out for help or inspires someone to keep going through a difficult time, then every mile has been worthwhile.”
With 27 weeks still to complete, the Miles of Smiles campaign continues to demonstrate how individual commitment, combined with community support, can create a positive impact both locally and internationally.
From Aberdeen to the Great Wall of China, the message remains the same: every step matters.
