Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce has pledged its support for young people by signing up to the Young Person’s Guarantee.

The guarantee is a commitment to connect every 16-24 year old in Scotland to a job, apprenticeship, education, training or volunteering. Introduced in the wake of CV19, it aims to give all young people the chance to succeed while offering employers the opportunity to build a skilled workforce now and in the future.

The Chamber is one of the first tranche of North-east organisations to sign up to the Young Person’s Guarantee. The guarantee asks employers to commit to one, or more, of the following asks:

  • prepare young people for the world of work through engaging with education, work experience and work-based learning opportunities
  • engage with and provide opportunities to young people who face barriers to work
  • create apprenticeships, training and upskilling opportunities for young people
  • create jobs and opportunities for young people
  • create an inclusive workplace to enable young people to meet their potential.

Mary Holland, director, Developing the Young Workforce North East, said: “It’s encouraging to see more organisations signing up to the Young Person’s Guarantee and we are delighted to welcome the Chamber as the latest signatory.

“No-one needs reminding of the challenges of the last 18 months. Our young people have been particularly affected during this period, as they’ve been unable to access the experiences, opportunities and conversations that inspire career choices.

“The Young Person’s Guarantee provides employers with a framework, so they can plan and develop ways to engage with young people now and in the future. Getting involved is straightforward - many organisations may be surprised to find that they are already meeting the requirements of the guarantee.”

Russell Borthwick, chief executive of the Chamber, said: “As a Chamber, our raison d'être is to support businesses to be better today while helping create the economic conditions for the future success of our region.

“Engaging with young people is key to ensuring that we develop and nurture a skilled workforce so that the North-east continues to be a great place to live, work, study, invest and do business.

“It is important for the Chamber to play our part and I would urge other organisations – large and small – to sign up to the guarantee.”
