A new book bench has been installed at Cala Homes’ Woodhurst at Oldfold Village development in Milltimber, following a successful bid at a charity auction raising funds for local charity Clan Cancer Support.
The bench, originally designed and installed as part of the Clan Cancer Support BookBench Trail exhibition back in June last year, has come home with the housebuilder, which was the original sponsor of the bench.
The bid further boosted Cala’s contribution to the initiative through its winning bid, contributing to the auction’s total of ?117,900 and an incredible overall campaign total of ?174,183.
These funds will help the charity to continue to support people and their families affected by cancer through initiatives such as its lifeline listening support service.
Designed by Lois Cordelia, Cala’s bench is named Vintage Aberdeen, and features artwork depicting some of the most recognisable names, landmarks and historical events connected to Aberdeen – a very fitting partnership which marked the housebuilder’s 150th anniversary last year since its establishment as the City of Aberdeen Land Association,
It was previously installed at Rubislaw Terrace Gardens in Aberdeen’s West End. Cala was partnered with Milltimber Primary school, which took part in Clan’s Tiny Tales Trail and helped them to decorate their bench by covering the cost of the art supplies.
Vintage Aberdeen also features a heartfelt plaque tribute to former Cala Homes colleague Brian Jamieson, who passed away in 2023 following a cancer diagnosis. Brian, affectionately known as BJ, was a Site Manager for Cala and had worked for the housebuilder for more than ten years before his passing.
Fraser Carr, Regional Director of Cala Homes (North), said: “The Clan Cancer BookBench Trail was very important to us for a number of reasons. Clan is a vital charity which helps people across the region affected by cancer. It’s one we have supported over the years through our community bursary initiative and subsequent Community Pledge.
“We sadly suffered the loss of our much-loved colleague, BJ, to cancer in 2023. We have installed our own memorial benches at two of our developments to serve as a place for the team to remember him, and now we have our BookBench at Oldfold Village which also includes a plaque in his memory.
“Lois did an amazing job designing a bench full of local nostalgia and as such, we faced some fierce bidding for the bench at the auction but we were determined it was coming home with us and it is money well spent to help Clan reach such a fantastic fundraising total.
“Clan can only continue to be an amazing support to people and an incredibly challenging time in their lives if businesses and individuals get behind its wonderful campaigns like the BookBench Trail.”
