On March 22, educators and students from the Grampian area attended an interactive event at Scotland’s Rural College’s (SRUC) Craibstone campus highlighting the variety of exciting careers available in the food and drink industry.
Over 100 delegates including teachers; school pupils; and college and university staff heard from a range of speakers about the education, training and career opportunities available in food and drink from farming to manufacturing through to retail and hospitality.
Attendees were treated to afternoon tea made by pupils undertaking a schools links programme between North East Scotland College and Aboyne Academy. Students from North-east Scotland also helped with the management of the event.
Moira Stalker, FDF Scotland Schools Programme Coordinator, said: “There are so many job opportunities available in the food and drink industry, including; science, product development, engineering, marketing, nutrition and design. The aim of this event was to inspire influencers to encourage even more Scottish children to think about how their food is produced and how that relates to the many exciting jobs on offer.”
Jim Metcalfe, chief executive of College Development Network (CDN) said: “CDN is leading a number of projects to promote the food and drink sector within Scotland’s colleges. This event is one of a series taking place around the country, which has been organised by the dynamic CDN Food and Drink Network. Working in collaboration with Food and Drink Federation Scotland, the network is encouraging colleges to offer educational food technology pathways into work or on to higher education.”
