Talented runners from Aberdeen city primary schools gathered for a Champion of Champions finale at Sheddocksley Sports Centre last week as part of this year’s Active Schools Fun Run Series.

Over 1000 pupils took part in the Fun Run Series at seven different venues across the city during April and May with the top runners from each venue selected to take part in last Wednesday’s finale to be crowned the Champion of Champions.

The free to enter Fun Run series was first launched in 2006 and has been sponsored for the second time by Perform Panel. The Bridge of Don based business provided the race numbers and medals for each participant.

Scott Mitchell, Active Schools Coordinator with Sport Aberdeen, said, “The main ethos around this event is fun and participation and we’re delighted to have had so many schools take part again this year.

“We welcomed runners of all levels and abilities, from those who came along to try out running for the first time, to keen runners who wanted the chance to compete locally against their friends and peers.

“A huge thank you to Perform Panel for sponsoring the event for a second year running. They were a great help volunteering at individual races on the day and we are really grateful for the medals we were able to provide each runner.”

Stephen Murray, Perform Panel Managing Director, said, “It was fantastic to see so many young people taking part to have fun and challenge themselves. We are proud to support an initiative that gives children the opportunity to celebrate their achievements while encouraging a lifelong enjoyment of being active.”

Primary 1-3 pupils run 400m, Primary 4 pupils run 800m and Primary 5-7 pupils have the option of running 800m or 1600m. Primary 4 pupils and Primary 5-7 pupils who run 1600m are then considered for the end of series Champion of Champions event.

Active Schools is a sportscotland initiative, delivered in Aberdeen by Sport Aberdeen, and provides children in all primary and secondary schools with opportunities to participate in sport and physical activity.
