Aberdeen Science Centre will explore the science behind volcanoes, tornados and earthquakes as part of an upcoming month of geoscience themed activities.
Running in the centre on weekends and school holidays in September, the ‘Dig Into Geosciences!’ theme, which is sponsored by Serica Energy, will showcase a variety of geoscience topics, including archaeology, geology, palaeontology, geography and environmental science through an interactive workshop and other fun activities.
The workshop will delve into the different types of natural disasters and phenomena seen around the world and allow visitors to get hands-on as they create and erupt a volcano, make a tornado in a jar and put their engineering skills to the test to try and construct an earthquake resistant structure.
An immersive Virtual Reality (VR) Earth Explorers experience will allow visitors to traverse some of Earth’s most impressive geographical features such as mountains, rivers and volcanoes, without leaving the centre, and a live science demonstration will also investigate fossils and geology, showcasing a variety of interesting rock specimens.
Younger visitors can also get involved through an interactive story and archaeology activity session held in the centre’s designated Under-6 Zone.
A series of hands-on new activities and games will also be available throughout the centre’s exhibition space, encouraging visitors to discover more about geoscience as they engage with the many different exhibits on offer.

“Sponsored by Serica Energy, our new themed activities will allow visitors to explore a wide range of geoscience-themed experiences, from hands-on experiments with volcanoes, tornados and earthquakes to a live science demonstration on fossils and an immersive VR journey beneath the Earth's surface. We hope that visiting Aberdeen Science Centre in September will present an opportunity for our visitors to learn more about the natural forces that shape our world, and make lasting family memories while doing so.”
Alongside the ‘Dig Into Geosciences!’ theme, Serica Energy is sponsoring the centre’s upcoming Wee Wonderers activities, offering a fun-filled structured programme, designed especially for the youngest learners.
Perfect for children aged 2-5, these weekly two-hour sessions, which run from Monday, August 31 to Monday, October 5, aim to bring learning to life through hands-on exploration, play and discovery in a fun, supportive environment. Each session will follow a new theme, which includes: Budding Builders, Geology Rocks, Adventures in Space, Little Detectives, Under the Sea and Colour Lab.
Participation in all six Wee Wonderers sessions costs £33 for one child and up to two adults, with an additional £20 for each additional child. Spaces in the Wee Wonderers sessions are limited so parents are encouraged to book ahead online to avoid disappointment.
