Stonehaven’s Ury Estate has reached an agreement with both Marks and Spencer and Aldi to operate its much-anticipated retail unit.

Planning consent has already been granted for a supermarket on the development, just off the A957 Slug Road at Ury Estate, and it is anticipated M&S and Aldi will share the 3,750sqm consented site.

It is hoped the space will open next year, subject to updated permissions and the completion of legal agreements with both retailers, providing a much-needed retail outlet for residents of the estate as well as the wider Stonehaven area.

Jonathon Milne from Ury Estate Developments said the two retailers would be a “fantastic addition” to the ongoing plans for the development, which includes a Jack Nicklaus signature golf course alongside housing.

“We feel the combination of M&S and Aldi offers everything that Stonehaven needs and is a fantastic addition to our development plans,” he said. “We hope to get the legal contracts and updated planning application in place to allow work to start on site this summer, so we can open the new outlet in 2027.”

M&S and Aldi said they were working closely with the Ury Estate team.

A spokesperson for M&S said: “We’re in detailed discussions with Ury Estate about bringing a new M&S Food store to the approved retail development in Stonehaven. We're working closely with their team and, subject to an agreement, hope to open a modern food store where customers would be able to shop the full range of delicious, great quality M&S Food and guaranteed trusted value products.”

A spokesperson for Aldi said: “We look forward to working with the team at Ury Estate, and subject to final agreement, are delighted to bring an Aldi store to this development. As the Which? Cheapest Supermarket for 2025, we know that there is high demand for an Aldi store in Stonehaven, with residents keen to have local access to our award-winning products that won’t be beaten on price.”

Ury Estate is being advised by chartered surveyors EYCO, which is leading discussions with the two retailers.

Funding was secured for the Ury Estate development and golf course in 2025, with work now well underway ahead of a planned phased opening later this year.

The £20million funding agreement from Oaknorth Bank cemented Ury Estate as one of the most eagerly anticipated masterplanned developments in Scotland, with an expected value of around £300million when completed.

There has already been considerable early interest in both Nicklaus Village, a collection of 59 luxury homes overlooking the golf course, and Glen Ury View, which will offer 187 family houses and bungalows, ahead of their official launch.

Several of the golf holes are expected to open for play this year, with the full course expected to open in 2027.

Mr Nicklaus previously said he was “enormously pleased” with the design of the course, which he said would be enjoyed by golfers for many generations.

Nicknamed the Golden Bear, Jack Nicklaus is considered to be one of the greatest golfers of all time, winning 117 professional tournaments in his career, including a record 18 major championships.
