Amazon is set to bring its 'Prime Air' service to the UK which will see packages delivered in less than an hour.

The retail giant has said it will bring the drones to one location in the country, although has yet to reveal where.

The idea was first thought of a decade ago, with the project beginning from a UK lab in Cambridge.

They've since been launched in California and Texas where packages that weigh five pounds (2.2kg) or less can be delivered in rapid time.

The safest method of delivery?

The project has faced a number of delays and regulatory hurdles, while mass redundancies and drones crashing in field testing have presented challenges to the company.

But Amazon Prime Air vice-president David Carbon says the technology is safe.

"It's hundreds of times safer than driving to the store," he told the BBC.

"I've never heard anyone say they wouldn't want something faster."

Packages are similar in size to shoe-boxes, though given weight restrictions, customers are limited in what they can order.

Carbon insists that the service will still prove popular, continuing: "What our customers will do is jump on to the Amazon website, they'll select drone delivery if it's available in their area, they'll order their product....and that will then set off the chain of events that goes to our ground system that finds the customer's yard, drops package off where they asked it, and we're out of there.

"I think it's going to be a norm that parcels are delivered by air. I don't think that's really in question anymore," he added.
