Avian influenza is a highly transmissible disease and in most cases results in the death of the bird. It spreads quickly and occurs during bird-to-bird contact or from the spread of faeces. Cases are increasing in both of the low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) and the highly pathogenic strain (HPAI H5N1).
According to DEFRA “the avian influenza virus changes frequently, creating new strains, and there is a constant risk that one of the new strains may spread easily among people”.
There are many ways to spot signs of the disease but the most noticeable way is a marked increase in the number of dead birds in a given area.
