Befriend a Child is delighted to announce the appointment of Susanne McMenemy as the charity’s new Head of Operations.

Susanne brings a wealth of experience to the role, having supported children, young people and families both within Befriend a Child and across the wider third sector. In addition to her work as Senior Befriending Co-ordinator at the organisation, Susanne has previously held roles with Barnardo’s and Victim Support Scotland, giving her extensive knowledge and insight into the challenges facing the children and young people supported throughout the region.

Susanne will officially begin her new role full time from 1st April 2026. Ahead of this, there will be a phased transition period as she balances induction into her new position while continuing to support her befriended children and dedicated volunteers.

Sarah Misra, CEO of Befriend a Child, said: “I am absolutely delighted that Susanne has been appointed as our new Head of Operations. Susanne’s commitment to the children, young people and families we support, alongside her depth of experience and sector knowledge, makes her exceptionally well placed to lead our operations team. We are excited for the future and confident that Susanne will play a key role in strengthening and growing our impact across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.”

Speaking about her appointment, Susanne McMenemy said: “I am incredibly proud to be stepping into the role of Head of Operations at Befriend a Child. Having seen first-hand the positive difference our volunteers make in the lives of children and young people, I am passionate about continuing to strengthen and develop our services. I’m looking forward to working closely with our dedicated team and volunteers to ensure we continue delivering high-quality, meaningful support to families across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.”

Befriend a Child supports children and young people growing up in difficult life circumstances by matching them with trained volunteers who provide consistent 1:1 befriending and mentoring relationships. Alongside this, the charity delivers a dedicated Family Support Project, offering tailored support to families, and 3 community youth clubs across priority areas of Aberdeen, providing a safe and positive space for young people to connect and grow. The charity believes every child deserves a happy childhood and the best chance to succeed and thrive.

Everyone at Befriend a Child would like to congratulate Susanne on her well-deserved appointment and wish her every success in her new role.
