The charity behind plans to revive Aberdeen’s Belmont Cinema have announced a free screening of Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’ to celebrate International Women’s Day.

International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women's equality.

This year’s theme is ‘Inspire Inclusion’, with the aim of forging a more inclusive world for women, where women are inspired to be included, with a sense of belonging, relevance and empowerment.

The screening will take place at the Cowdray Hall on Saturday 9th March at 2pm.

Jacob Campbell and Dallas King, two of the trustees of Belmont Community Cinema Ltd, were excited to announce the event.

Jacob Campbell said:

“A great way for our Belmont Community to mark International Women's Day 2024 is with a screening of Barbie, the highest grossing film directed by a woman of all-time.

‘This free screening will be particularly special, with all donations going towards Rape Crisis Grampian - a fantastic local charity that does fantastic work supporting women and others during the most traumatic time of their lives.

‘It is indicative of the community-based, inclusive and safe cinema environment that our team are working so hard to build.’ Dallas King said:

‘Last year’s Barbenheimer phenomenon showed the world that audiences are ready to embrace the big screen experience again post-Pandemic. While we await our return to the Belmont, what better place to be than in Barbieland?

“Greta Gerwig shattered the glass ceiling of what is achievable for women in film. She showed us that we are more than Kenough, so come on Barbie, let’s go party!”

While the screening will be a free ticketed event, donations can be made on the day with all proceeds going to North East Charity, Rape Crisis Grampian.

Rape Crisis Grampian (RCG) is a local charity that provides support to people, over the age of 11 years, who have been subjected to sexual violence at any time in their lives.

Tickets for the screening can be booked online via Eventbrite from 10am on Monday 26th Februaryhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-belmont-cinema-presents-barbie-for-international-womens-day -tickets-847365752777
