St Margaret’s Braemar plays host to FOLKMOSIS this July, a powerful coming-of-age story told through music, film and spoken word over three acts.

Written and performed by talented singer Beth Malcolm, the performance embraces traditional and new songs, the story twisting against a shifting soundscape.

The work was initially commissioned by Celtic Connections and developed in association with Perth Theatre and Concert Hall into a mesmerising touring production.

Beth Malcolm grew up in a ‘folky’ household, filled with songs and stories. Her debut album, Kissed and Cried, was released to great acclaim in 2023 and she has scooped up a brace of Scots Singer of the Year Awards in 2022 and 2024.

FOLKMOSIS is both an enthralling show and a seminal album in its own right, with Beth Malcolm joined in the production by a top cast of leading young Scottish musicians, with lush musical arrangements glueing the work together.

Act 1 is rooted in the traditional world and the classic folk songs Beth grew up listening to.

Act 2 follows her ‘rejection years’, and the influences of rich and varied musical voices such as Amy Winehouse, Paolo Nutini and London Grammar. Their love songs, sung from the chaos of modern life, were the soundtrack to her angsty, heartfelt late teenage years.

Act 3 is Beth’s coming of age – her return home to the songs and sounds of Scotland, as a now-grown woman.

FOLKMOSIS has received a string of positive reviews and accolades, for its thoughtful production, honest narrative and Beth’s gifted storytelling abilities.

Looking ahead to the performance at St Margaret’s Braemar on Friday 4th July, St Margaret’s Venue Manager Lyndsey Boden said:  “We are so looking forward to welcoming Beth Malcolm back to St Margaret’s.

“Beth was a huge hit when she performed at the Braemar Folk Festival in 2023, shortly after the launch of her first album.

“FOLKMOSIS is something altogether different – a powerful new work and an engaging show of music, visuals and spoken word, best enjoyed in a live setting.

“Beth will be joined in concert by a tremendous line-up of some of Scotland’s most talented young trad performers.

“Having seen highlights of the show from Celtic Connections earlier this year, it will be really spectacular to bring FOLKMOSIS to the intimate setting of St Margaret’s.”
