Alex Salmond believed someone within SNP HQ hired a private detective to spy on him, according to claims in a new book by former SNP MP Joanna Cherry KC.

In her memoir Keeping the Dream Alive, Ms Cherry says the former first minister warned she could also be under surveillance during a period when she was facing a bullying complaint that was later dismissed.

She writes: “Alex Salmond advised me that he understood somebody at SNP HQ had engaged a private detective to spy on him and I should be alert to the possibility that they might also have a private detective spying on me.”

The SNP strongly denied the allegation, with a spokesperson saying: “This claim is simply not true.”
