Broadening appeal for local listeners

Aberdeen's local radio station Original 106 will soon be playing a broader range of music that will appeal to their growing audience* in the North-east of Scotland. Up until now, Original 106 were licensed by Ofcom to be an "alternative station playing adult oriented album tracks, classic rock and pop-rock hits".

Now, with the approval from the radio industry's regulator Ofcom, Original 106fm has been granted permission to widen its appeal to play different genres of popular music.

Original 106 managing director Adam Findlay said "Original 106 is fiercely proud of its local credentials and we want to cater to our target audience in the best way we can. Within the last couple of months there have been analogue transmitter close-downs in Aberdeen which has served only to reduce choice, and we wanted to do something that would redress that imbalance by expanding our music base".

Programme controller Martin Ingram: "I'm delighted that we've been given the green light to do something with our output that we know our listeners will love. Our present loyal audience have nothing to fear - we will still play the songs they enjoy, coupled with others that until now it has been difficult for us to play, but will still be aimed at our target audience of adults aged 35+ in Aberdeen and north east Scotland. Our commitment to local news and features remains unchanged".

Original 106 broadcasts to North-east Scotland on 106.8 and 106.3FM, and is available online, on the Original 106 app, and via Amazon smart speaker. Original 106 also have three increasingly popular online radio stations, specialising in current chart music, classic oldies and country music.
