An estimated 41% of people in the UK either work from home full-time, or are hybrid workers, with many of these believed to be self-employed. In the modern world it is becoming more common for people to run businesses from their homes, and its important to make sure all the right arrangements are in place to manage your business.

Every business has a duty to make sure their waste and recycling is dealt with in a way that doesn’t harm the environment. Businesses operating from home need to ensure they are managing their business waste and recycling appropriately, rather than simply putting it in their bins at home.

All businesses need to have a collection/disposal arrangement in place with a licenced commercial contractor who can manage their waste. The waste contractor will provide the required Waste Transfer Note to your business.

Just like household rubbish, business recyclables should be sorted separately from other waste. This includes paper, cardboard, metal, glass, and plastic.

Food businesses also need to be sure that food waste is kept separate for collection, unless they produce less than 5kg of food waste per week, in which case its acceptable to use

Hazardous waste should be kept away from other types of waste and recycling, and stored securely. A consignment note is needed for disposal of hazardous business waste.
