Career shift for FQM’s newest recruit

FQM Ltd has appointed Calum MacDonald as QHSE coordinator following a rigorous multi-stage interview process, Calum was offered the position in September and started working at the FQM Aberdeen Head Office in October 2017.

Calum had spent almost four years at Expro North Sea Ltd, where he was employed in Operations Recruitment. In addition to a BSc (Hons) in Geography from the University of Glasgow, Calum has as a HNC in Mechanical Engineering.

Indeed, it was Calum’s impressive people skills, and his willingness, even a determination to learn, that secured him the role.

This drive saw him pursue a NEBOSH qualification at his own cost and in his own time. As well as being irrefutable evidence of taking action this is something that will be a huge benefit to his role and to FQM as he progresses in his career.

Taking this willingness to learn from an intention to an achievement was critical for the successful applicant, as the job will involve intensive training in each of FQM’s service areas.

This will include, amongst other things, assisting the management with the delivery of projects; building Business Management Systems; carrying out and reporting on investigations; undertaking Gap Analyses and Audits as well as writing technical and audit reports.

Calum had the following to say about his new opportunity: “Since leaving university it has been my desire to pursue a career in QHSE to assist companies in continually improving their QHSE performance. I am delighted to have been selected by FQM to fulfil the role of QHSE Coordinator and have the opportunity to help clients in such a way through the various services that FQM provides.

“I have no doubt that this will be a steep learning curve over the next few months but with the support, mentoring and vast knowledge of the team around me to draw upon, in conjunction with my own personal drive to learn and succeed, I am confident that I will become a valued member of the FQM team with the ability to offer our clients the best possible service.”

Commenting on the new appointment, FQM’s Managing Director, Chris Docherty said: "At FQM we are very encouraged and excited to be investing in young and highly enthusiastic people to join our growing company. We have many highly experienced and competent professionals who have worked with the company for many years, so giving young people the opportunity to learn, interact with them and grow in a career within QHSE is something we will continue to invest in and promote.

“I personally went through a similar career progression through academic studies and technical on-the-job learning and mentoring, this gave me strong foundation to help me in my career.

“We are very happy to welcome Calum to the company and are very encouraged by the ease with which he has settled in to the office. His contribution already in this short period since he started has served as a confirmation of our decision. We really should not be surprised by this as the process we undertook to find the right person, was planned, controlled and measured to ensure we found the right fit for FQM, our clients and our business environment.”
