From discovering a new passion to representing Scotland and becoming world champions, girls and boys at Albyn School are showing just how far sporting ambition can take them.
This ‘Scottish Women and Girls in Sport Week’, we celebrate the opportunities, achievements and inclusive sporting culture helping our girls to thrive.
At Albyn School, they believe every girl should have the opportunity to find her place in sport. Whether that's discovering a new activity, building confidence, enjoying time with friends or pursuing an ambition to compete at the highest level, they want every pupil to feel that sport is for her.
From Nursery through to S6, their sporting programme offers an increasingly diverse range of opportunities, encouraging girls to get involved, try something different and discover what they are capable of. With it being ‘Women and Girls in Sport Week’, there is plenty to celebrate.
Making sport welcoming for every girl
At Albyn they know that getting girls involved in sport is only part of the picture. Creating an environment where they feel comfortable, confident and motivated to keep participating is just as important.
Research consistently highlights that girls can face additional barriers to taking part in sport and physical activity, with confidence, social pressures and concerns about fitting in all playing a part. They are committed to challenging those barriers and creating opportunities where girls can participate on their own terms.
One example is their girls-specific football club in the Lower School. By providing a dedicated space for girls to learn, play and develop their skills alongside one another, they hope to make football more accessible and enjoyable, particularly for those who might otherwise feel hesitant about getting involved. It is about building confidence, encouraging friendships and, most importantly, helping girls develop a positive relationship with sport that can last well beyond their school years.
Football is just one part of the picture. Their Lower School pupils can explore an impressive variety of activities including gymnastics, hockey, laser run, tennis, skiing, cross country, climbing, netball, yoga and dance. Some will find a competitive passion; others will simply enjoy being active, learning new skills and spending time with friends. Both are equally valued.
Celebrating outstanding achievements
While participation and enjoyment are at the heart of our sporting ethos, they are incredibly proud of the ambition, dedication and achievements of our female athletes. Over the past year, a number of Albyn pupils have enjoyed exceptional success, at both national and international level.
Among the highlights:
- Melissa (S6) has taken an exciting next step in her football journey, signing for Aberdeen Football Club senior women's team.
- Jess (S1) has become the U13 World Champion in Laser Run, an outstanding international achievement.
- Millie (S2) has been crowned U13 Scottish Champion across Cross Country, Road and Track and Field events, recording the fastest under 15 mile time in the UK this year.
- Beatrix (S4) has secured a place on the highly selective Scottish Ballet Senior Associate Programme and has represented Team GB on the international stage in target sprint.
- A number of our girls have also been selected to represent Scotland in hockey and netball at national level, an achievement that reflects their hard work and dedication to the sport.
These achievements span a wonderfully diverse range of disciplines, from football and hockey to endurance sport and dance. Each represents countless hours of practice, commitment and perseverance, and the school is delighted to see their pupils' talents recognised at such a high level.
Just as importantly, these successes provide inspiration for the girls following in their footsteps. Seeing what other pupils have achieved helps demonstrate that there is no single pathway in sport and no limit to what girls can aspire to.
More than sport
The value of sport extends far beyond the playing field. Through participation, girls develop confidence, resilience, teamwork, leadership and the ability to support one another. They learn to embrace challenges, celebrate successes and pick themselves up when things don't go to plan.
They also build friendships, discover new strengths and develop habits that can support their physical and mental wellbeing throughout their lives.
At Albyn, they want their pupils to feel empowered to take up sport, have a go, challenge themselves and enjoy being part of something bigger. Whether a girl is taking her first steps into a new activity or competing on the international stage, every sporting journey deserves encouragement and recognition.
A future full of possibility
Scottish Women and Girls in Sport Week is an opportunity to celebrate how far girls' and women's sport has come, but also to recognise the importance of continuing to create opportunities for the next generation.
Albyn School is proud of the sporting culture growing across their community and of the many girls who are helping shape it. From the first kick of a football to a Scottish championship title or a world championship victory, every achievement begins with an opportunity.
Their ambition is simple: to ensure every girl has the confidence, encouragement and opportunity to discover just how far she can go, and they can't wait to see what they achieve next.
