Sam Leys, CFINE’s Senior Operations and Development Manager is setting out to raise £1,000 for the Aberdeen based charity by taking part in Saltire 24.

This year marks Sam’s fifth year competing in the event but this first time taking on the challenge solo!

Saltire24 takes place in June, and challenges runners complete a 4.2 mile course around Knockburn Loch in Aberdeenshire as many times as they can within 24 hours.

Sam at Saltire24 2025!

In previous years Sam has taken part in the race alongside her friends in a team called the ‘Plod Squad’. The group is well known at Saltire24 due to their love for fun and dressing up, often making multiple costume changes throughout the event. However, this year Sam has decided to take on the challenge solo – as if the previous years weren’t hard enough!

Every year Sam uses the race as a chance to fundraise for CFINE and support the growing demand on our services. CFINE is a local charity whose core purpose and aims are to improve health and wellbeing and the environment, tackle poverty and build resilience for and with disadvantaged, vulnerable, low-income individuals, families and communities in North East Scotland. To achieve this, CFINE delivers a wide range of support services. This includes access to food, inclusion and skills development, improving finance education and wellbeing.

Fundraising is particularly important this year for CFINE as the cost-of-living crisis continues to have an impact on people every day. This has caused an increased number of people approaching CFINE for a range of support. Including a sharp rise in the number of people accessing out emergency food provision, with numbers rising from 43,850 parcels distributed in 2024 to 54,398 parcels in 2025.

Last year Sam smashed her target and raised £625 but this year she is aiming to raise £1,000. With all the money raised go to directly support CFINE’s wrap around support services.

Every donation helps to make a difference. Donating £5, can help support a family with emergency food and toiletries for a week. £20 provides a person with dedicated benefits advice and support to better manage their money. £30 enables someone to attend a cooking skills course. £50 pays forward 20 weekly shops from CFINE's community pantry. £250 lets us deliver over 2,000 meals to charities and community organisations.
