Commenting on the news that the expansion of Heathrow airport has been approved by a committee of ministers, research & policy director at Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce James Bream said:

“Finally - a decision. Has the procrastination ended at last?

“The Government appears to have grasped the nettle, however we will be keeping the pressure on. There will be more consultations in the new year and we will be vocal in our efforts to ensure real progress is made.

“This is a positive move for the UK’s competitiveness at a time when business activity and investor confidence must be safeguarded from uncertainty.

“Our connections to global markets are vital to the continuing prosperity of the North-east, with more than half of our members rating access to Heathrow as either important or critical to their business.

“The Chamber has supported the expansion of Heathrow because it is capable of providing the most comprehensive set of links to the North-east of Scotland.

“We have played a part in raising the national importance of regional connectivity and the part it plays in driving the UK economy. Hub capacity is limited in the UK and this is risking our international competitiveness.”
