Michies the Chemist has launched their free Aberdeen Talks lecture series with the first speaker already been announced for May.

Charlies Michies on 391 Union Street in Aberdeen has announced that John Otto will be the first speaker to take part this month. Founder and Chairman of the JJR Macleod Memorial Statue Society, John Otto has some fascinating insights to share about Aberdeen’s unsung hero, Professor John Macleod, the Scottish co-discoverer of insulin and Nobel Prize Laureate.

John is a lifelong Aberdonian who has lived with type one diabetes for over 50 years and has been an advocate for Macleod ever since discovering his modest gravesite in Allenvale Cemetery.

John’s lunchtime lecture will provide a helicopter view of Macleod’s key role in one of the 20th century’s greatest medical breakthroughs; the design and construction of ‘Macleod’s Corner’ in Duthie Park; and the Society’s ongoing efforts to restore the professor’s unjustly tarnished reputation (including some exciting new developments).

There will be an opportunity to ask questions and to learn about Macleod’s early life and education here in the Granite City, the Insulin Trail walking route, new tourism-related plans now in development, proposed enhancements at Macleod’s Corner and more.
