This month Charles Michies 391 Union Street are delighted to be welcoming Willie Watt PPRIAS.

Willie Watt is an architect with a deep-rooted love of drawing, having drawn since he was at primary school and throughout his career, both in terms of his work and for simple pleasure in his free time. He fundamentally believes that the act of drawing catalyses architectural thought allowing an architect to analyse a landscape, a site or a building so that they can respond creatively to it in order to create a solution which is appropriate and fits the locale. Drawing also makes the creative process for all involved fun. That is a process and approach which underpins the work of his practice Nicoll Russell Studios where the pen is every bit as important as the computer.

During his talk, Willie will be exploring the concept of 'place' and how we can learn from that via drawing. His focus will be on his recent sketching project in Orkney on behalf of the North Isles Landscape Partnership supported by the The National Lottery Heritage Fund to lead sketching workshops on the Island, then bringing that round to Aberdeen City centre and its wonderful heritage.

This is a FREE EVENT - booking in advance essential via Michies on 01224 33 33 27.

The cafe will be open in advance, so feel free to come along a little earlier and enjoy a coffee/tea and home bake.

More about Willie
Willie Watt is an architect and a director at the award winning Nicoll Russell Studios.

Drawing, sketching and painting though is much more to him than simply work, it’s something he has always done and often it compliments a bike ride along the coast, around a town, into the country or into the wilds of the highlands. His work is underpinned by drawing, but he uses a variety of techniques, historically using watercolour, pens, watercolour pencils/crayons and more and more often mixed media. .

He shares his drawings on Instagram @thearchitectssketchbook and his work has been exhibited in a number of galleries including The House of an Art Lover, The Royal Scottish Academy and the Galerie d’Architecture de Paris and his sketchbooks won the Sir Robert Lorimer Award for drawing. He is a past president of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland and occasional studio tutor at the Scott Sutherland School of Architecture.

Willie is also hosting a sketching workshop in the city center on the same day. For more information about both events, please visit Michies facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/CharlesMichies
