Clan
Cancer Support is introducing a new evening exercise class to provide fitness
and wellbeing support to anyone impacted by a cancer diagnosis.
Delivered
by a specially trained exercise instructor, the class will focus on physical
exercise to help cancer patients prepare for and recover from surgery,
chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
The
class is suitable for anyone undergoing a cancer journey with each individual
assessed prior to taking part and friends and family welcome to attend and stay
for peer support afterwards.
The
charity is offering a taster session on Wednesday, January 24 at 5.30pm with
classes taking place fortnightly thereafter.
Kay
Johnston, Head of Cancer Support Services at Clan, said: “Looking after your
physical and mental wellbeing is key if you’re going through a cancer journey
and our exercise class aims to increase overall fitness while supporting those
with injuries and limitations.
“We’ve
introduced this evening class to complement our late-night opening hours at
Clan House in the hope of making our services more easily accessible to those
who struggle to access our support during regular working hours.
“It’s
our hope this class will help more local people impacted by a cancer diagnosis
find ways of becoming more active in a way that feels good for them, while
nurturing peer groups and friendships along the way.”
Clan’s
new evening exercise class follows the success of the charity’s afternoon
exercise session which has supported 201 attendances since it launched in
Spring 2023.
Ally
Shand (65) from Aberdeen has attended the class since it started. He was
diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2021 and says the group has helped him get
back into exercise after surgery, allowing him to continue to work as a
joiner.
He
said: “I had a lot of muscle problems following my surgery. I visited Clan and
was quickly assessed before starting the exercise class which has allowed me to
find out what I can do and what I need to build on.
“I
have a really physical job and post-surgery there were things I was struggling
with. I’ve noticed a huge difference in my movement since I started and I’m now
working with the instructor on a plan to continue my fitness journey.”
Clan’s
evening exercise class coincides with the charity’s regular late night opening
hours at Clan House in Aberdeen, with listening support available until 8pm
every second Wednesday.
