A North-east MP and prominent supporter of the region's Green Freeport bid could be handed a role in Rishi Sunak's new government.

The Times is among the newspapers speculating that West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine MP Andrew Bowie - a vocal supporter of Mr Sunak - could land a seat in the new Cabinet.

Yesterday, Mr Bowie would not comment on his own future in a Sunak government, the former party vice-chairman, who also served as Theresa May’s parliamentary private secretary while she was prime minister, is seen as a potential rising star, according to The Times.

There has been speculation that he could join the Scotland Office as a junior minister to serve an apprenticeship for the cabinet role.

However, the Press & Journal is tipping him as a contender to replace Alistair Jack in the top job as Scottish Secretary.

The 35-year-old, an Aberdeen University graduate and Royal Navy reservist who grew up in Alford and Inverurie, won his seat in 2017.

In a media round yesterday, Mr Bowie wouldn't be draw on his own future, instead focussing on what the relationship between Holyrood and Westminster will look like under the new Prime Minister

“A priority for Rishi is firstly to re-establish an element of respect between the UK Government and Scottish Government,” he said.

“For quite a while there has been a feeling that the UK Government was overruling or overriding the Scottish Government. That is unsustainable. We need to govern in the best interests of the Scottish people and to do that we need to be seen as working together.”

He also praised Jack’s time in office and said he would back him to stay in the post.
