Council officer in the running for Primary Educator of the Year award

Aberdeenshire Council Learning Technology Officer Susan Sey, from Huntly, has been nominated for Primary Educator of the Year in the Scotland Women in Technology Awards 2017.

The awards ceremony will take place in Glasgow on Thursday, October 26 and Susan has been recognised as a tireless advocate for the use of digital technology in learning and teaching.

Susan played a central role in launching the council’s Games Con Awards for pupils across Aberdeenshire this year and is also at the forefront of Digital Leaders programmes developed for both pupils and teachers across the council area.

The awards submission highlights the innovative and exciting ways Susan promotes digital technologies, including coding and computational thinking, in her work.

Cllr Gillian Owen, chair of the council’s Education and Children’s Services Committee explained: “This brings well-deserved recognition for Susan who has a real passion for ensuring technology is available to every learner across Aberdeenshire, no matter what age, stage or ability. It’s brilliant to see colleagues being applauded on the national stage and I’d like to thank Susan and her team for all of the hard work they put in to creating positive experiences for our pupils.”

Vice chair Cllr Mark Findlater added: “These awards champion and celebrate women, and the teams and organisations around them, who are achieving success both in the technology industry and the initiatives which grow future talent. Well done to Susan – you are a fantastic role model for youngsters and teachers across Aberdeenshire.”

Susan commented: “It’s wonderful to be recognised in this way. I put in a lot of work and effort to promote the positive benefits of the use of digital tools in learning and teaching to prepare young learners for life and work in this ever-changing, globally-connected world.

“I am looking forward to the event and it will be a great chance to hear keynotes and meet women from all areas of the technology sector. The best part of my job is being able to see the creativity and innovative ways learners can use technology in the classroom and it’s great to have the opportunity to share this locally and nationally.”
