Aberdeen City Council chiefs have been accused of facilitating next day drink driving after announcing free night buses for football fans watching Scotland's World Cup matches.

The council has pledged £15,000 from bus lane fines to fund the late night services during Scotland's Group C games, amid concerns there will be limited public transport available, the P&J reports.

Schools and public services across Aberdeen are set to close the following day after First Minister John Swinney declared a bank holiday to mark Scotland’s return to the men’s World Cup.

Pubs have also been granted late licences to allow supporters to stay until the final whistle.

However, independent councillor Alex Nicoll criticised the plans, warning they could contribute to Scotland's "terrible relationship" with alcohol.

SNP public protection convener Miranda Radley claimed the concerns were “a wee touch nonsensical”, while SNP finance convener Alex McLellan said he couldn't believe opposition councillors were "attacking our hospitality industry and businesses trying to put on events."
