Cove Rangers have been handed a transfer embargo until May 31, 2027 and fined £5,000 after admitting a series of SPFL rule breaches relating to a historic contractual payment to a player.

The League One club failed to make the payment, notify the SPFL that it was in default and later incorrectly certified that it had no overdue payments to current or former players as of January 31, 2026.

The SPFL confirmed the player has now been paid in full, while £2,000 of Cove’s fine has been suspended.

Cove said: “The club is disappointed by the severity of the sanctions and is carefully reviewing the decision and considering all available options.”

Manager Paul Hartley told the P&J: “I feel we’ve got a strong enough squad but clearly this is not ideal as having an embargo against you means I can’t add to the team.

“But it’s life, you get on with it, you knuckle down.”
