St Margaret’s School for Girls celebrated its fifth annual Culture Week from October 5-9, bringing pupils and staff together for a vibrant week of activities celebrating the rich diversity of the school community.

Organised by the Race and Culture Committee, Culture Week has become a much-anticipated highlight of the school calendar, providing opportunities for pupils to share their heritage, explore different traditions and learn from one another. With 33 nationalities represented in the Senior School alone, the week reflected the many cultures, experiences and perspectives that make St Margaret’s such a special community.

Pupil-led throughout, this year’s celebrations featured a lively programme of activities designed to encourage participation, creativity and collaboration across the school. From cultural performances and interactive activities to opportunities to explore traditions from around the world, pupils embraced the chance to share their experiences and discover something new.

A highlight of the week was the Junior Fashion Show on Monday, which celebrated cultural identity and traditional dress, with younger pupils showcasing a colourful variety of outfits from around the world. The celebrations continued on Friday with the Senior Fashion Show, as senior pupils took to the catwalk to proudly model traditional clothing and celebrate the diverse cultures represented within the school community. Both events brought colour, creativity and enthusiasm to the week, providing a wonderful opportunity for pupils to share and celebrate their cultural heritage.

Ceilidh dancing also brought pupils together as part of the celebrations, providing a lively introduction to Scottish dance ahead of Senior Games. Organised at the request of the Culture Committee, the activity was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Scottish traditions while encouraging pupils to participate, have fun and learn together.

Throughout the week, pupils were encouraged to engage with different cultures, appreciate new perspectives and recognise the experiences that connect us as well as those that make each of us unique. The celebrations highlighted the importance of creating an inclusive environment in which every girl feels valued, respected and confident in sharing her voice.

St Margaret’s believes that understanding and celebrating our differences helps to strengthen our community. Culture Week offers a meaningful opportunity for pupils to develop their curiosity, empathy and appreciation of the wider world, while celebrating the individuality that each girl brings to school life.

As Culture Week marked its fifth year, St Margaret’s is grateful to the Race and Culture Committee, its pupil leaders and everyone who contributed to making the celebrations such a success. Their enthusiasm and commitment continue to make Culture Week a wonderful expression of the diversity, creativity and community spirit of St Margaret’s.
