A Fraserburgh woman whose tireless commitment to her community has touched countless lives has been recognised by local councillors with a prestigious Best of Banff and Buchan Award.
Isobel ‘Beldy’ Blackhall has become one of the most familiar and valued faces in the Broch through many years of dedicated voluntary service, supporting an incredible range of organisations, charities, community groups and local events.
The Best of Banff and Buchan Award recognises individuals who go above and beyond to make a positive difference in their communities.
Presenting the award, chair of Aberdeenshire Council’s Banff and Buchan area committee, Councillor Doreen Mair, paid tribute to Beldy's remarkable contribution, describing her as “an outstanding lady” and “a real stalwart of our community”.
Throughout the year, Beldy can be found volunteering at some of Fraserburgh's best-loved events, including the Blue Light Festival, the Vintage Car Rally and performances by the Junior Arts Society and other youth groups.
Whether it’s helping behind the scenes, supporting fundraisers or lending a hand wherever needed, Beldy is known for always stepping forward when others need assistance.
Councillors heard that her dedication extends far beyond organised events, as on many Saturdays, regardless of the north-east weather, Beldy can often be found at the entrance to Tesco selling raffle tickets and raising funds on behalf of charities and community organisations.
Beldy also works tirelessly on behalf of Fraserburgh and District Parish Church, the Church Centre and the Church Charity Shop. Through her commitment, organisation and ability to inspire others to help, she has played a vital role in ensuring the continued success of these important community resources.
Presenting the award, Councillor Mair said: “Beldy’s public appeal and the tremendous respect local folk have for her and her commitment automatically means that people are more inclined to donate and donate more than they would if other folk were asking. Quite simply, Beldy’s smile opens wallets!
“She is a very cheery person who has a great deal of compassion for her community. There’s not a single person in the community who you will hear say a bad word about her because there are none. Everyone sings her praises and deservedly so and Fraserburgh would be a far poorer place without her. The world would be a better place with more people like Beldy. Thank you Beldy for all you do, you so richly deserve this recognition.”
