Distance Learning helps Historical Bridge Project

Distance learning helps historical bridge project

Thousands of students worldwide are benefiting from Robert Gordon University’s (RGU) distance learning courses, including a construction manager working on a historic bridge project in Uganda.

Richard Musiime is leading up construction on the New Jinja Bridge project, to build the second bridge over the River Nile in Uganda.

The bridge, which will cost around $127million, is the first cable-stayed bridge in East Africa and will stretch 525m across the river.

As the project began, Richard wanted to improve his skills to an international level by gaining a Masters degree from a top European university.

He was awarded a place at Robert Gordon University in September 2014, studying towards an MSc Construction Project Management.

Richard said: “I will be studying this course until December this year and the entire experience has been great.

“Studying online has been really enjoyable, especially when it came to a group project that tasked us to come up with a joint piece of work, despite us all being located in different parts of the world. It taught me what teamwork really looks like.”

There are currently over 2,700 distance learning students enrolled at Robert Gordon University.

The university’s state-of-the-art virtual learning environment, Campus Moodle, allows students to communicate easily with tutors and fellow students 24/7, providing all the help and support needed for studying in any location across the world.

Richard believes that being a distance learning student with Robert Gordon University has been invaluable to his work.

He said: “Thanks to Robert Gordon University, I have been able to interact with fellow professionals in my field, who have worked on similar construction projects to my own and have met similar challenges.

“The course has helped me develop a better understanding of the construction management process and being able to learn from European experts, while also on the job, has been an incredible experience.”
