Elon Musk's Tesla has launched a bid to become an energy supplier to British households in the coming months.
The company has applied to Ofgem for a licence that would allow it to take on the likes of Octopus and British Gas by selling power to homes as soon as next year.
The supplier, Tesla Electric, is likely to integrate with the billionaire's electric cars and Powerwall home batteries with a promise to save on household bills.
The application, which was signed by Andrew Payne who runs Tesla's European energy operations, was filed last month.
The energy watchdog Ofgem could take up to nine months to process licence applications.
Tesla sales have slumped in the UK this year amid growing market competition and controversies over the CEO's support for Donald Trump.
Industry data shows UK car registrations fell by 60% in July.
