Robert Gordon University (RGU) has launched the recruitment process for a new Lay Chair of the Board of Governors, seeking an experienced and influential leader to oversee the governance of Scotland's leading modern university.
The appointment comes at an important time for the University as it continues to deliver its Roadmap 2030 ambitions and respond to opportunities and challenges across the higher education sector. Recently named Higher Education Institution of the Year at the Herald Higher Education Awards, RGU is also recognised as the top modern university in Scotland and first in Scotland for Graduate Prospects - On Track in the Complete University Guide 2027.
With a vision to become the UK's leading work-integrated university, RGU is focused on enabling students to succeed through industry-relevant learning, strengthening research and innovation, expanding strategic partnerships and maximising its contribution to economic and societal wellbeing. The Lay Chair plays a pivotal role in overseeing progress against these ambitions and ensuring the University remains well positioned for long-term success. Working closely with fellow governors and the Principal, the Lay Chair is responsible for enabling the Board to provide appropriate scrutiny, support and strategic oversight.

The University is encouraging applications from individuals with significant leadership and governance experience across business, industry, the public sector, healthcare, finance, energy, higher education and the voluntary sector. The recruitment process aims to attract a diverse field of candidates whose expertise and perspectives will strengthen the work of the Board and support good governance.
The position carries an annual honorarium of £22,000 and an estimated commitment of approximately 50 days per year.
