A parliamentary standards investigation into Nigel Farage is set to resume after the Reform UK leader won the Clacton by-election he triggered last month.
Farage secured 22,239 votes, ahead of novelty candidate Count Binface on 9,455, after Labour, the Conservatives, Liberal Democrats, Greens and Restore Britain declined to field candidates.
Turnout was 44.4%, down from 58.7% at the 2024 general election, with a record 34 candidates contesting the seat.
Farage stood down as Clacton MP five weeks ago after parliamentary standards commissioner Daniel Greenberg opened an investigation into his failure to declare a £5million “personal gift” from crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne ahead of the 2024 general election.
The investigation was suspended when the by-election was called but will now automatically resume following Farage’s return to the Commons.
Farage has denied wrongdoing and had framed the contest as “people versus the establishment”, saying he would use the by-election to “stick two fingers” up at his critics.
