Final call for the Dandara 5k

It’s ‘last-chance saloon’ for runners looking to take part in this year’s Wild West themed Dandara 5k and family fun day at Hazlehead Park which takes place on Saturday, September 9, 2017.

The popular event has limited spaces available for the Dandara 5k and 2k children's races with the 1k and 600m fun run now completely sold out.

The running festival, which supports the rejuvenation of Aberdeen’s much-loved Hazlehead Park, has already attracted hundreds of local school children with more than 430 runners already signed up to take on the 5k challenge.

Participants can register online until today (Monday, September 4) or sign up and pay in cash at the registration area on the day of the event, with the first race due to start at 9.30am.

This year the event will take on a Wild West theme with organisers Friends of Hazlehead and Sport Aberdeen encouraging runners to don their Stetsons and cowboy shirts for the races.

Gary Walker, director of the Friends of Hazlehead, said: “It’s hard to believe we have only a week to go until the fourth annual Dandara 5k and family fun day at Hazlehead Park, so we’d urge any runners still to sign up to do so before it’s too late.

“This is our biggest fundraising event of the year with money from previous years helping to pave the way for major improvements in the park; such as the creation of memory paths, the replanting of the Queen Mother Rose Garden, the restoration of the fountain and the revamp of Pets’ Corner.

“We hope to see lots of runners turning up on Saturday, September 9, to enjoy this great open space and, in turn, contribute towards its redevelopment so it can be enjoyed by people of all ages for years to come.”

Dandara’s head of sales, Peter Best, said: “Dandara is proud to once again sponsor this fantastic event which celebrates one of the best outdoor spaces Aberdeen has to offer.

“Friends of Hazlehead is a fantastic charity, run by local people who go above and beyond to support the park. We’re looking forward to joining them along with many others next weekend to enjoy what will be another great day out.”

The event will continue into the afternoon with catering and entertainment available for all the family including performances from Bon Accord Brass Band, face painting and a bouncy castle.

The first female and male winners of the 5k will be awarded a £100 voucher for the Running Shop, with second and third place receiving trophies. The top three male and female runners in the children’s 1k and 2k races; and first boy and girl to complete the fun run will be presented with trophies.
