Former council leader Alex Nicoll has warned the numbers being touted to justify a new £323million rapid transit system in Aberdeen don't "add up".

Council officials agreed to press ahead with the modern tram-like bus route and vehicles, The Press and Journal reports, despite the scheme's projected cost more than doubling to £323million.

Officials claim the rapid transit scheme would see almost 9,000 more people use buses in the city every year, but Alex Nicoll, the now independent councillor, questioned the figures.

Declaring himself a "maths geek", Mr Nicoll said over four million extra journeys would need to be made "just to pay off the interest", the P&J reports.
