Four young engineering apprentices have found themselves facing an unexpected hurdle in their training journeys following the sudden collapse of a local engineering firm in Aberdeen.

The company’s closure has resulted in the apprentices being made redundant part-way through their Modern Apprenticeship programmes.

Despite the setback, all four apprentices remain determined to continue building their careers in engineering, with the support of Tullos Training – a well-established training provider in the region.  Tullos Training is now actively working to help the apprentices find new employers who can offer them the opportunity to complete their qualifications and gain vital industry experience.

Having already completed an SVQ in Performing Engineering Operations at SCQF Level 5 and a National Certificate in Manufacturing Engineering at SCQF Level 6, two of the affected apprentices have gained a training background in manufacturing process.

They had been working full-time in the workplace, progressing toward their SVQ in Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering at SCQF Level 6. The hands-on nature of their roles has provided them with valuable industry exposure and a chance to apply their developing skills in real-world setting.

The remaining two apprentices were based at Tullos Training on a full-time basis having only just started their Modern Apprenticeship programmes which involved combined classroom-based learning programme with practical skills development, preparing them for a successful transition into the engineering workforce.

CEO at Tullos Training, Iain Garrett said: “While this is undoubtedly a difficult time for the apprentices, we are committed to supporting them through this transition. They have already shown great promise and dedication, and we are confident that, with the right opportunities they will continue to thrive.”

The training centre is now calling on local engineering businesses to consider taking on one or more of the apprentices, either as part of their current workforce or through new apprenticeship opportunities.  Employers would benefit not only from enthusiastic new team members but also from the knowledge that they are playing a key role in developing the next generation of skilled engineers.
