Sport Aberdeen is supporting sportscotland’s national Summer of Sport campaign by offering a range of free activities to support the wellbeing of children and young people across the city during the school holidays.
Working in partnership with Aberdeen City Council, Sport Aberdeen is offering free swimming for children and young people aged 4-17 at all public and family sessions across its seven swimming pools, including Bridge of Don, Bucksburn, Cults, Dyce, Lochside, Northfield and Tullos.
In addition to swimming, Sport Aberdeen is also encouraging young people to take part in Teen Fitness activities running throughout Summer in the City, including Boxercise and HYROX Next Gen sessions at Get active @ Kincorth, Get active @ Jesmond, and Get active @ Sheddocksley.
The Teen Fitness timetable includes male-only, female-only and open sessions designed to help young people aged 14 and 15 build confidence, improve fitness, and enjoy physical activity in a fun, safe and supportive environment.
Sport Aberdeen, Kim McRobbie, Active Schools & EDI Manager, said, “We are proud to be supporting the national Summer of Sport campaign, alongside Aberdeen City Council’s Summer in the City again this year, to help more children and young people access free opportunities to stay active over the summer holidays.
“By providing free junior swimming sessions across all of our pools, alongside delivering a range of free and accessible activities we hope to remove barriers to participation and encourage more families to make the most of the opportunities available through the Summer of Sport campaign.
“It’s also great to see additional Teen Fitness opportunities available this summer, giving young people the chance to try new activities with their peers in friendly gym environments.”
Summer of Sport is a nationwide programme of free and low-cost sporting activities designed to help young people get active in their local communities during the holidays. Backed by Scottish Government investment and administered by sportscotland, the initiative forms part of a £20 million national fund supporting opportunities in sport and physical activity across Scotland.
Aberdeen City Council culture spokesperson Councillor Martin Greig, said, “We are pleased to work alongside Sport Aberdeen to ensure young people across the city have the chance to stay physically active and try new sports over the summer.
“Initiatives such as Free Junior Swimming and Teen Fitness sessions, along with the wider Summer in the City programme, mean there’s something for every young person, no matter their abilities or interests.”
