UK economy grows after rebound from the King's Coronation

The UK economy grew by 0.2% between April and June following a rebound from an extra Bank Holiday for the King's Coronation.

Growth in June was stronger than expected at 0.5%, showing a recovery when the economy lost one working day due to the national holiday in May.

June's warm weather also benefited the construction industry as well as pubs and restaurants.

But the economy was impacted by strike action in the health sector.

Trump legal drama 'not a distraction' for Scots golf tournament

Donald Trump's golf businesses in Scotland insist their boss' legal problems are not a distraction.

Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeenshire will host its first major tournament later this month. The Staysure PGA Seniors Championship will mark a milestone for the Trump empire.

Despite events in the US, Sarah Malone, executive vice-president of Trump International Scotland, said Mr Trump's ongoing legal issues were not a distraction and that it was "business as usual" at the course. She told the BBC: "We have always lived with politics, prejudice, and media coverage. That is part and parcel of who we are."

Car insurance reaches record highs

Motorists are paying more than ever to insure their vehicles with the industry claiming inflation and a massive rise in vehicle repair costs are to blame.

An analysis of 28 million policies found the average premium in the three months to the end of June was £511, 21% higher than this time last year.

Some motorists have contacted the BBC citing quotes triple the previous year. The Association of British Insurers (ABI) said sustained cost pressures were behind the record highs.

Owner of Scotsman eyes Telegraph newspaper

The owner of the Yorkshire Post and the Scotsman newspapers has said it is interested in buying the Daily Telegraph and its sister titles when they go up for sale.

National World, which publishes more than 100 regional newspaper titles and websites, told shareholders it was a "possible participant" in any sale of Telegraph Media Group (TMG).

Receivers took control of TMG in June after its owners failed to repay debts.

A sale date is yet to be announced.

SNP MP announces expulsion from party

MP Angus MacNeil has announced he has been expelled from the SNP after he was suspended from its Westminster group last month.

The Na h-Eileanan an Iar (Western Isles) MP had been suspended after reportedly clashing with party chief whip Brendan O'Hara.

The SNP conduct committee met on Thursday after he refused to rejoin the group at the end of his suspension.

Sunak’s stealth tax raid sees burden on households soar

Rishi Sunak’s stealth tax raid has seen payments to the Exchequer surge by 40% since the pandemic, Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) analysis shows.

Payments of taxes on earnings and wealth – such as income tax and capital gains tax – were up by 39.2% in the first quarter of this year compared with the final months of 2019, the OECD found.

The tax burden on households has shot up more quickly in the UK than in other big rich economies, The Telegraph said, despite all facing similar blows from Covid-19.

By contrast, Americans are paying just over 30pc more than they did before Covid.
