All of Scotland has water scarcity after driest period in 60 years

All of Scotland is now experiencing water scarcity, with some areas approaching significant levels, environment agency Sepa has warned.

The River Dee and the Firth of Forth are among areas which are experiencing moderate scarcity expected to be upgraded to significant as the dry weather continues.

A number of areas, including Potterton near Aberdeen, Turnberry in South Ayrshire and Balfron in west Stirlingshire are having normal water supplies supplemented by tankers.

Billionaires fall as King rises in latest Sunday Times Rich List

The number of UK billionaires has fallen while King Charles' personal wealth has jumped to equal former prime minister Rishi Sunak and his wife Akshata Murty, according to the latest Sunday Times Rich List.

The annual list of the UK's 350 richest people revealed the biggest decline in billionaires in the paper's history.

Meanwhile in the past year, the King's wealth has grown by £30m to £640m, increasing his rank 20 places to 258 with Sunak and Murty.

Putin no-show at Istanbul talks dashes Ukraine breakthrough hopes

President Zelensky has accused Russia of having no interest in even a ­temporary truce in Ukraine after ­President Putin refused to attend a summit in ­Istanbul and sent a team of low-level negotiators in his place.

Zelensky had challenged the Russian leader to meet him for face-to-face talks in Turkey in what would have been the first meeting between the two men since Putin ordered tanks into Ukraine into 2022.

Putin, whose trips outside Russia have declined ­dramatically since the start of the full-scale war, did not reply to Zelensky’s ­invitation.

BA fined £3m after luggage handlers hurt in falls

British Airways (BA) has been fined more than £3.2m after two of its luggage handlers suffered serious injuries in falls at Heathrow Airport.

The men were hurt in "near-identical" incidents at the west London airport while using televators - machines used to load luggage into planes - Southwark Crown Court heard.

Ravinder Teji suffered back injuries and cut his head when he fell 1.5m (4ft 11ins) in August 2022, while Shahjahan Malik suffered a bleed on the brain after falling 3m in March 2023.

Aberdeen harbourmaster gives insider account after deadly Solong ship crash

Port of Aberdeen’s harbourmaster has detailed the complex operation to remove dangerous cargo from the Solong – the fire-ravaged container ship involved in a fatal North Sea collision that remains the focus of a major investigation.

Aberdeen’s South Harbour is now acting as caretaker for the vessel, which sustained severe structural damage in the crash and the fires that followed.

Harbourmaster Benji Morrison told the port’s annual general meeting that the Solong is now, “effectively just a hull”.

One in 10 have no savings, financial regulator says

Millions of people are walking a financial tightrope, with one in 10 UK adults saving no money at all, a major report has concluded.

This leaves many exposed to economic shocks and vulnerable to rising bills, according to the Financial Conduct Authority's (FCA) Financial Lives survey.

Moreover, anxiety and stress levels were relatively high, particularly among those burdened by debt.
