International School Aberdeen (ISA) recently played host to a record-breaking Model United Nations (MUN) conference, bringing together students from across the city for high-level debate and diplomacy.

The event, organised entirely by ISA's student cabinet, saw the largest turnout for any ISA conference to date. Delegates from Albyn School, Robert Gordon’s College, and St Margaret’s School for Girls joined the ISA cohort to tackle complex global issues, fostering connections between the city’s independent schools.

Organised by the new student cabinet led by President Finlay Johnson and Vice President Teela Murray the conference was a testament to student leadership. The team managed every aspect of the event, from chairing debates to logistical setup, mirroring the autonomy seen in professional environments.

The session centered on a nuanced debate regarding the potential global legalisation of cannabis. Over 75 delegates, representing more than 50 countries, spent two hours navigating the complexities of international policy. The format required students to step out of their own shoes and adopt the perspectives of different nations, challenging them to be open-minded and adaptable.

Finlay Johnson, President of the ISA MUN cabinet, highlighted how the conference helped students put the school's ethos into action:

“MUN conferences like this help students to hone their skills and explore our ISA values. The opportunities for delegates include communicating with their peers, taking risks in standing up on stage, and being open-minded as they develop their arguments and take on new ideas.”

He added that these experiences have long-term benefits: “Beyond school, the ability to communicate effectively is invaluable. MUN unites students and is an excellent way to meet new people and discuss interesting topics in a fun and interactive way.”

The conference is designed to push students out of their comfort zones. Anton Van Dillewijn, who participated representing Finland, noted: “It forces you to think on the fly and adapt. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who isn’t as confident in their public speaking or talking to a lot of people.”

Model United Nations is the oldest club at ISA, with a legacy spanning more than 40 years. Following the success of this local conference, the group is now preparing for upcoming events, including a multi-day conference at St. Leonard's School and an international trip to The Hague next year.
