GB Tarpaulins has found a creative new use for the cardboard tubes used to transport its PVC material, donating them to local schools and nurseries for children to use in play and learning activities.
The Portlethen-based business, which supplies and manufactures tarpaulins, covers and PVC products, has been passing on the tubes to local nursery and school groups rather than letting them go to waste.
Hillside School in Portlethen recently shared photos showing some of the ways the children have been using the tubes, from imaginative play to practical activities, including using them as broomsticks, passing objects through them, and creating tunnels for toy cars.
The idea came from a simple question: could something usually treated as packaging be useful to someone else?
For GB Tarpaulins, the answer has been a clear yes.
The initiative reflects the company’s practical approach to sustainability, finding small but meaningful ways to reuse materials where possible while supporting the local community.
Sophie Burzynski, Director of Business Development at GB Tarpaulins, said: “The PVC material we receive comes on a cardboard tube, and rather than seeing them go unused, we thought they could be put to better use locally. It has been lovely to see how creative the children have been with them. Something that starts out as packaging in our workshop has ended up becoming part of play, learning and imagination.”
The feedback from Hillside School has highlighted just how versatile the tubes can be, with children finding their own ways to use them as part of everyday play.
Sophie added: “It is a small thing, but it is exactly the kind of community connection we value. If a simple item from our day-to-day work can be reused and enjoyed by local children, that feels like a really positive outcome.”
GB Tarpaulins is continuing to look for practical ways to reduce waste, reuse materials and support local organisations where possible.
