Geoactive Ltd today announced the launch of DecomX, a new P&A Decision Support System designed to reduce the time and overhead around well abandonment engineering while keeping engineering judgement with the engineer.
Developed by decommissioning engineers, DecomX addresses a growing challenge across the industry: the increasing effort required to demonstrate the selected de-risked option, validating compliance, drafting submissions, plan campaigns, and keep designs aligned as conditions change prior and during operational execution.
“P&A engineering itself is demanding, but most teams are spending more time proving and demonstrating decisions than doing the engineering,” said DecomX Product Champion, Gary McWilliam. “DecomX was built to deal with that overhead; not by replacing engineers, but by supporting their decisions with consistent, traceable evidence.”
Supporting the Full P&A Workflow
DecomX supports well abandonment design across environmental, risk, cost, compliance, and execution. Engineers build their P&A design directly in the platform. The system then generates feasible alternative options for ALARP comparison. Compliance runs independently on every design change, checking regulatory standards and internal company rules at the same time.
The working view is a live well status diagram. As the design evolves, the diagram and report update together. Submissions export to a single PDF that includes schematics, barrier definitions, demonstrable evidence, compliance findings, and cost risk justification.
Decisions that are supported, created, and accelerated by engineers, not buried by them.
From Single Wells to Campaigns
Unlike traditional document based workflows, DecomX allows wells to be grouped into decommissioning campaigns. Comparison sets are consistent across wells, and the same compliance rules apply throughout the portfolio.
Campaign planning, offshore unit scheduling, and equipment allocation are supported within the same environment, giving project managers a single view of progress during planning and execution.
Designs That Stay Alive Offshore
For operations teams, DecomX carries the design to the operations. The planned sequence and pre‑modelled contingency branches are available on location, with costs and durations already estimated.
When the design changes during operations, updates are made in the platform and compliance and exhaustive checks re‑run automatically. The final submission reflects what actually happened, not just what was planned.
Built for Engineers, Reviewers, and Regulators
DecomX provides a common reference point for engineers, project managers, compliance teams, and regulators. Compliance findings are visible as engineers work; dispensations are recorded with justification, and the full audit trail is retained in one place.
For regulators and reviewers, the output is simple: one PDF containing the complete, consistent record of the design and its justification.
Availability
DecomX is browser based and requires no local installation. It can be deployed in the Geoactive’s cloud, a client environment, or on a standalone laptop. Design, ALARP, and compliance functionality are available now, with campaign planning and operations execution supported by the platform architecture.
