Step into Maggie’s Aberdeen and you’ll be met with something instantly comforting – a smile, a hello, and perhaps a cup of tea.
It’s all thanks to the dedicated volunteers who play a vital role in creating a calm, welcoming space for anyone affected by cancer. And right now, Maggie’s Aberdeen is calling for new volunteers to join their vital team.
Volunteering at Maggie’s is flexible, meaningful, and open to anyone who wants to make a difference – whether you’re newly retired, have a few hours a week to spare, or are looking for a way to give back while developing new skills.
Anne
For Anne, volunteering is deeply personal. Having lost both her mother and brother to cancer, she made a commitment to give something back. After 13 years of volunteer work elsewhere, she joined Maggie’s in 2022.
“Volunteering gives me great satisfaction,” she explains. “It’s an honour to be part of the welcome team. Interacting with visitors and staff gives me a sense of purpose and boosts my well-being.”
Anne’s typical day consists of welcoming visitors, making tea and coffee, and creating a calm environment. These are deceivingly small actions that have a big impact for those going through an incredibly difficult time.
Jackie
Jackie, who retired in 2023, also wanted to do something meaningful with her time. Having seen loved ones benefit from Maggie’s, she felt drawn to help.
“As people arrive, I welcome them at the door,” Jackie shares. “For many, it’s a major step. I show them around, offer them tea, and help them feel at ease before introducing them to a Cancer Support Specialist.”
She values the variety of people she meets: “Each visitor has such an interesting story. It’s a real privilege to be part of their journey, even in a small way.”
Why volunteers matter, and how you can help
Volunteers at Maggie’s aren’t medical professionals; they’re compassionate people who help create a space that feels safe and human.
Volunteering isn’t just about giving back. It’s also an opportunity to meet new people, learn new skills, and add meaningful experience to your CV.
