Aberdeen FC's most successful team - The Gothenburg Greats - are to be awarded the freedom of the city.

The top civic honour will be presented to the players during a weekend of celebrations, running from May 12 to May 14, as the club marks the 40th anniversary of their famous triumph over Spanish giants Real Madrid.

Aberdeen will also be given the honour as a club itself, and will be the first time the Freedom of Aberdeen has been awarded in over half-a-decade.

Aberdeen City Council voted to honour the Gothenburg Greats and their club during a meeting yesterday.

All but one of the team that won the title that night in the Nya Ullevi in Gothenburg are still living. Midfielder Neale Cooper sadly died in 2018.

In 1999, manager Sir Alex Ferguson had previously been given the Freedom of Aberdeen to mark his heroics at the Dons helm, which saw him win three league titles, four Scottish Cups, and one Scottish league Cup, as well as the two Euro titles.
