As Guyana prepares to hit the oil production milestone of one million barrels a day, a business event exploring opportunities in the country has marked a significant expansion.

Following on from Granite PR’s eighth annual Aberdeen-Guyana Gateway at Macdonald Norwood Hall Hotel in Aberdeen last month, Guyana's High Commissioner to the UK, His Excellency Dr Rajendra Singh recently spent time in the North east meeting with businesses.

In addition to being welcomed to Aberdeen Town House by Lord Provost Dr David Cameron, Dr Singh toured Aberdeenshire businesses with Provost Judy Whyte and held discussions with businesses ready to explore the Guyanese market, or grow their links there during a session hosted by Granite PR.

Speaking during his visit to the North east, Dr Singh said: “I was glad to hear that so many businesses are already engaged with Guyana.  The country has a huge growth profile with a very strong economy projected to grow by approximately 25% this year.

“As well as energy companies, there are lots of possibilities for many other businesses such as logistics, food security agriculture, aquaculture, renewables and more so this visit has provided a valuable opportunity to learn, discuss and look to future ways of working together.”

Aberdeenshire Provost Judy Whyte added: “This visit was an excellent opportunity to make connections, share knowledge and strengthen links between Guyana and Aberdeenshire.  Discussing our similarities in terms of the key economic sectors and our potential to learn from each other was underlined by our informative visits to a few Aberdeenshire businesses.  We are very grateful to ONE SeedPod, Forest Farm, ANM Group and Stewart Trailers for hosting us.”

Aberdeen Lord Provost Dr David Cameron said: “It was a great privilege to spend time with Dr Raj Singh last week when he visited the Aberdeen Town House. Aberdeen and the North-east of Scotland's connection to Guyana is strong and meetings strengthen this even more as we transition from oil and gas to sustainable energy.”
