Helping buildings shape up for next decade

Specialists will be on hand next week at the Arts Centre in King Street, Aberdeen, to offer advice on repairing the city’s granite heritage and how to apply for grants.

Organised by Aberdeen City Heritage Trust, the event is aimed at owners of property falling within the Trust’s current eligible areas, which include the South end of King Street, Marischal Street, Regent Quay, Market Street (North), Guild Street, Bridge Street, Union Terrace, Golden Square, Schoolhill and Upperkirkgate.

Details of building repair grants under the Union Street Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme, which Aberdeen City Council is running, will also be available.

Aberdeen City Heritage Trust is supported by Aberdeen City Council and Historic Environment Scotland and has supported the repair of more than 300 buildings since 2005.

Councillor Marie Boulton, the convener of the Council’s Planning Development Management Committee, said: “In supporting the work of the Aberdeen City Heritage Trust, the Council is delighted to be backing efforts to conserve our historic buildings.

“I hope owners take the opportunity to learn what help is on offer, especially when our unique streetscape is something that everyone can enjoy.”

The Trust can accept applications for external repairs, including reroofing, repair of chimneys, gutters and traditional joinery for grants of up to 50% of agreed eligible costs. Shopfronts rates can be as much as 75% of agreed eligible costs.

Trust Project Officer Douglas Campbell said: “The beginning of the year is a great time to take stock and plan ahead for repairs that traditional granite properties need from time to time.

“Trust building repair and shopfront grants can make a sizeable contribution towards carrying out repairs using traditional materials and techniques, which can be more costly.”
