Over 2,000 buyers and sellers visited Thainstone Centre on Saturday, 14th April to take part in the third collective sale of plant, machinery and equipment of 2018, with all sections achieving strong prices, and 83% of the 2,890 lots selling on the day.
The top selling item, 2016 Scania G490 CB 8x4 tipper with drawbar in the heavy commercials class, was purchased for an impressive £90,000, the highest price seen thus far in 2018.
Mark Barrack, head of Thainstone Specialist Auctions, said: “Saturday’s collective sale was the best-attended this year, and saw some exceptionally strong prices – particularly in the tractor and plant and heavy commercials sections. These substantial sales prices are indicative of the high-quality nature of lots that sellers are putting forward, with buyers continuing to favour second-hand equipment over new to eliminate the extensive lead time that comes with purchasing from the factory.”
Following the top-selling Scania tipper in the heavy commercials section was a 2013 Volvo FH16 750 6x2 Artic, which sold for £51,500, and an Andover tri axle Beavertail drag trailer that achieved £28,500. Other notable prices include a 2009 Volvo FH16 660 6x4 Artic for £35,000 and a 2014 DAF LF220 12t tipper for £27,000.
The tractor and plant section saw a 2017 JCB 3CX excavator achieve a substantial £60,500, followed by a 2017 JCB 86 Midi tracked excavator, which realised £42,000. Top prices in this category also included a 2011 JCB 3CX contractor excavator which achieved £30,000, a 2013 Manitou 932 telescopic handler selling for £24,200, and a 2009 John Deere 6830 tractor which realised £21,800.
Light commercials and 4x4s also achieved strong prices, with a 2017 Ford Ranger Wildtrack double cab achieving the section’s top price of £22,200. Selling for £16,500 was a 2014 Land Rover Defender high capacity pickup, followed by a 2017 Ford Transit 350 L2 H2, which was purchased for £14,000. Other notable prices include a 2014 Nissan Navara double cab which sold for £13,000, and a 2016 Ford Transit Custom 290 that realised £11,600.
The top price in the trailers, caravans and containers section was a Lunar Zenith 5-berth caravan that sold for £3,400. The second highest-selling item, a Bailey Senator 5-berth caravan, achieving£2,900 and was followed by an Ifor Williams BV85 box trailer that was purchased for £2,550. Further top prices include £2,500 for an Ifor Williams HB511 horse box, £2,300 for a Brian James car transporter, and £1,800 for an Ifor Williams 8x5 trailer.
In the farm implements section, the highest-priced items were a Wragg post driver and KV ES100 5 fur plough, both of which sold for £5,000. Top-selling items in this category also include a Portal frame shed purchased for £4,600, followed by a Fleming 24 twin axle trailer which was purchased for £4,050, a Set Vaderstad roller that realised £4,000, and a Poly tunnel which sold for £1,700.
Mark Barrack continued: “Despite the looming Brexit uncertainty, there were an unprecedented number of lots sold at impressive prices, which exceeded all of our expectations. It was also particularly pleasing to see attendees join us on-site from as far as Ireland and Eastern Europe. With increased demand among buyers from the UK and internationally looking to purchase second-hand equipment, and with the tumultuous winter weather behind us, we expect to see more high-quality lots, continued strong attendance and strong prices realised at our upcoming sale in May.”
The live and online event, hosted by the Thainstone Specialist Auctions and Aberdeen & Northern Marts team, is held eight times per year at Thainstone Centre, Scotland’s premier auction centre. The sale is well-attended by both on-site and online buyers and sellers, with buyers from across Europe making substantial purchases through the sales online platform, i-bidder. More than 100 registered buyers joined the sale remotely via i-bidder from the UK, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Poland and Romania, and purchased a total of 30 lots – the largest number of lots purchased online this year.
The next plant, machinery and equipment sale is scheduled for Saturday, 26th May, 2018 from 9am at Thainstone Centre, Inverurie. Consignors are encouraged to submit their entries as soon as possible to receive maximum exposure to potential buyers.
