With 1 in 6 species in the UK now at risk of extinction, according to The Wildlife Trusts, protecting natural habitats has never been more important. In recognition of the recent Garden Wildlife Week, housebuilder Dandara partnered with local Brownies in Aberdeen to help protect vulnerable bird species.

Dandara invited the 9th City of Aberdeen Brownies to decorate bird birdboxes, which will be installed in their gardens and at the housebuilder’s development in Hazelwood.

Not only did the Brownies have a chance to explore their artistic skills it also gave them an opportunity to deepen their understanding of biodiversity and conservation. The initiative forms part of Dandara’s wider commitment to sustainability and creating eco-friendly communities that support both people and wildlife.

Claire Bathgate, Head of Sales for Dandara Scotland, said: “Garden Wildlife Week is a great opportunity to highlight the importance of protecting our natural environment and supporting biodiversity. Many British bird species are short of nesting holes as gardens, parks and woodlands are tidier than they used to be, reducing the number of natural hollows available.   We hope these boxes will provide safe spaces for birds to raise their young, while also encouraging the girls to connect with nature and understand what they can do to help protect it.”

Jennifer Bruce, Macaulay District Commissioner, commented: “These birdboxes provide a brilliant learning opportunity for the girls and help spark important conversations around biodiversity and conservation. Hands-on experiences like this make a real difference, helping children develop a lasting appreciation for their local environment and link to different parts of the Girlguiding programme. We’re passionate about creating sustainable places and hope initiatives like this continue to inspire future generations.”

Garden Wildlife Week celebrates the importance of creating wildlife friendly outdoor spaces and encourages communities across the UK to support endangered species through conservation efforts.
